ALEXANDER WANG S/S 2013 REVIEW: straight cycle — day 5

Leather panels, helmets, geometric cut-outs, monochrome, damn. My first thought was that the shoes reminded me of those athletic socks with the stripes at the top. Combined with the leather, helmets, sweatshirt-like designs, and the blacktop-esque concrete floor, Alexander Wang's S/S 2013 collection channels an athletic vibe (something present last year when motocross had its run as a "hot trend" and something I really enjoy this season too with bomber jackets, fitted caps, and hidden-wedge sneakers galore), but this collection goes beyond athleticism and ventures into Futuricana (another twist on "Americana"... but for the future... you know...), which is something that's been on the radar this season as well. The combination of the two is conceptually interesting, and Alexander Wang's execution of the theme is commendable, my favorites of the collection being around 4:00.

According to Alexander Wang's interpretation of next season, forget about fitted silhouettes and bodycon — the silhouettes of these designs are as boxy and geometric as the cutouts they don (or, technically, don't don). Future don't care 'bout your figure. You shouldn't care 'bout your figure. And if anyone else try to tell you they care 'bout your figure and shame you for having whatever figure you have, take a bottle of water and threaten to throw it at them but then drink it instead because clean water is a privilege (though, as I see it, unjustly so) that you shouldn't waste. Seriously, people. Health is beautiful, not the physical manifestation of it.

Where was I??? Oh, future don't care. (It don't.) Though some designs (most notably, the dresses that are featured around the six-minute mark) do conform to the body's shape, most of this collection's outfits do not — something that's also been prominent in the past few collections I've featured during Straight Cycle. And, having thrown on oversized flannels or a large denim button-up almost everyday for the past five months (out of lack of motivation and creativity, but we can discuss my personal slump later), the silhouette elimination is something I can get, will get, and have already gotten into.

And talk about futuristic designs (um, hello, ALWAYS talk about futuristic designs — be progressive, peeps)! Sometime during the show, I felt like the "future" element in the collection began to be more cyber-like, like the entire collection is just a preview of the uniforms ("What???" I hear you in the back. I know. We won't have uniforms — are you kidding me?! But we will have inspiration, which is cool with you, right?) that we'll all be wearing when the internet goes quasi-meta-metaphysical in seventy years. Futurama knows what's up. And apparently so does Alexander Wang.

Let me know what's goin' on in your mind about ALEXANDER WANG's spring/summer collection for 2013, and I'll see you in 2073. (And I guess tomorrow for the MIU MIU review too...)
